  277. <p>Installing a Hadoop cluster typically involves unpacking the software
  278. on all the machines in the cluster.</p>
  279. <p>Typically one machine in the cluster is designated as the
  280. <span class="codefrag">NameNode</span> and another machine the as <span class="codefrag">JobTracker</span>,
  281. exclusively. These are the <em>masters</em>. The rest of the machines in
  282. the cluster act as both <span class="codefrag">DataNode</span> <em>and</em>
  283. <span class="codefrag">TaskTracker</span>. These are the <em>slaves</em>.</p>
  284. <p>The root of the distribution is referred to as
  285. <span class="codefrag">HADOOP_HOME</span>. All machines in the cluster usually have the same
  286. <span class="codefrag">HADOOP_HOME</span> path.</p>

  289. <h2 class="h3">Configuration</h2>

  291. <p>The following sections describe how to configure a Hadoop cluster.</p>
  292. <a name="N1006A"></a><a name="Configuration+Files"></a>
  293. <h3 class="h4">Configuration Files</h3>
  294. <p>Hadoop configuration is driven by two important configuration files
  295. found in the <span class="codefrag">conf/</span> directory of the distribution:</p>
  296. <ol>
  297. <li>
  298. <a href="http://hadoop.apache.org/core/docs/current/hadoop-default.html">hadoop-default.xml</a> - Read-only
  299. default configuration.

  302. <em>hadoop-site.xml</em> - Site-specific configuration.

  305. <p>To learn more about how the Hadoop framework is controlled by these
  306. configuration files, look

  308. <p>Additionally, you can control the Hadoop scripts found in the
  309. <span class="codefrag">bin/</span> directory of the distribution, by setting site-specific
  310. values via the <span class="codefrag">conf/hadoop-env.sh</span>.</p>

  312. <h3 class="h4">Site Configuration</h3>
  313. <p>To configure the the Hadoop cluster you will need to configure the
  314. <em>environment</em> in which the Hadoop daemons execute as well as
  315. the <em>configuration parameters</em> for the Hadoop daemons.</p>
  316. <p>The Hadoop daemons are <span class="codefrag">NameNode</span>/<span class="codefrag">DataNode</span>
  317. and <span class="codefrag">JobTracker</span>/<span class="codefrag">TaskTracker</span>.</p>
  318. <a name="N100B5"></a><a name="Configuring+the+Environment+of+the+Hadoop+Daemons"></a>
  319. <h4>Configuring the Environment of the Hadoop Daemons</h4>
  320. <p>Administrators should use the <span class="codefrag">conf/hadoop-env.sh</span> script
  321. to do site-specific customization of the Hadoop daemons' process
  322. environment.</p>
  323. <p>At the very least you should specify the
  324. <span class="codefrag">JAVA_HOME</span> so that it is correctly defined on each
  325. remote node.</p>
  326. <p>Administrators can configure individual daemons using the
  327. configuration options <span class="codefrag">HADOOP_*_OPTS</span>. Various options
  328. available are shown below in the table. </p>

  363. log files are stored. They are automatically created if they don't
  364. exist.

  367. <span class="codefrag">HADOOP_HEAPSIZE</span> - The maximum amount of heapsize
  368. to use, in MB e.g. <span class="codefrag">1000MB</span>. This is used to
  369. configure the heap size for the hadoop daemon. By default,
  370. the value is <span class="codefrag">1000MB</span>.
