  280. <p>Installing a Hadoop cluster typically involves unpacking the software
  281. on all the machines in the cluster.</p>
  282. <p>Typically one machine in the cluster is designated as the
  283. <span class="codefrag">NameNode</span> and another machine the as <span class="codefrag">JobTracker</span>,
  284. exclusively. These are the <em>masters</em>. The rest of the machines in
  285. the cluster act as both <span class="codefrag">DataNode</span> <em>and</em>
  286. <span class="codefrag">TaskTracker</span>. These are the <em>slaves</em>.</p>
  287. <p>The root of the distribution is referred to as
  288. <span class="codefrag">HADOOP_HOME</span>. All machines in the cluster usually have the same
  289. <span class="codefrag">HADOOP_HOME</span> path.</p>

  292. <h2 class="h3">Configuration</h2>

  294. <p>The following sections describe how to configure a Hadoop cluster.</p>
  295. <a name="N1006A"></a><a name="Configuration+Files"></a>
  296. <h3 class="h4">Configuration Files</h3>
  297. <p>Hadoop configuration is driven by two important configuration files
  298. found in the <span class="codefrag">conf/</span> directory of the distribution:</p>
  299. <ol>
  300. <li>
  301. <a href="http://hadoop.apache.org/core/docs/current/hadoop-default.html">hadoop-default.xml</a> - Read-only
  302. default configuration.
  303. </li>

  305. <em>hadoop-site.xml</em> - Site-specific configuration.
  306. </li>

  308. <p>To learn more about how the Hadoop framework is controlled by these
  309. configuration files, look
  310. <a href="api/org/apache/hadoop/conf/Configuration.html">here</a>.</p>
  311. <p>Additionally, you can control the Hadoop scripts found in the
  312. <span class="codefrag">bin/</span> directory of the distribution, by setting site-specific
  313. values via the <span class="codefrag">conf/hadoop-env.sh</span>.</p>
  314. <a name="N10097"></a><a name="Site+Configuration"></a>
  315. <h3 class="h4">Site Configuration</h3>
  316. <p>To configure the the Hadoop cluster you will need to configure the
  317. <em>environment</em> in which the Hadoop daemons execute as well as
  318. the <em>configuration parameters</em> for the Hadoop daemons.</p>
  319. <p>The Hadoop daemons are <span class="codefrag">NameNode</span>/<span class="codefrag">DataNode</span>
  320. and <span class="codefrag">JobTracker</span>/<span class="codefrag">TaskTracker</span>.</p>
  321. <a name="N100B5"></a><a name="Configuring+the+Environment+of+the+Hadoop+Daemons"></a>
  322. <h4>Configuring the Environment of the Hadoop Daemons</h4>
  323. <p>Administrators should use the <span class="codefrag">conf/hadoop-env.sh</span> script
  324. to do site-specific customization of the Hadoop daemons' process
  325. environment.</p>
  326. <p>At the very least you should specify the
  327. <span class="codefrag">JAVA_HOME</span> so that it is correctly defined on each
  328. remote node.</p>
  329. <p>Administrators can configure individual daemons using the
  330. configuration options <span class="codefrag">HADOOP_*_OPTS</span>. Various options
  331. available are shown below in the table. </p>

  366. log files are stored. They are automatically created if they don't
  367. exist.
  368. </li>

  370. <span class="codefrag">HADOOP_HEAPSIZE</span> - The maximum amount of heapsize
  371. to use, in MB e.g. <span class="codefrag">1000MB</span>. This is used to
  372. configure the heap size for the hadoop daemon. By default,
  373. the value is <span class="codefrag">1000MB</span>.
